What is a Basic Bodice ?
A basic bodice is a garment that covers the torso and is typically attached to a skirt or pants. It is a key component of many types of clothing, including dresses, blouses, and tops. The bodice is usually sewn to fit closely to the body and may be designed to be worn with or without a separate waistband or belt. It can be made of a wide range of materials, including cotton, silk, and various types of synthetic fabrics, and may feature a variety of different styles and designs, such as darts, pleats, or gathers to create a fitted shape. The bodice may also include features such as a zipper closure, buttons, or snaps for fastening. In addition to serving as a foundation for a variety of different garments, a basic bodice can also be a standalone garment, worn on its own or paired with other pieces such as a skirt or pants.
To make a basic bodice, you will typically need to take a minimum of six measurements:
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape measure parallel to the ground.
Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waistline, above your belly button and below your ribcage.
Hip: Measure around the widest part of your hips, typically at the level of your pelvic bone.
Shoulder-to-waist: Measure from the Center of your shoulder, over your bust and down to your natural waistline.
Shoulder width: Measure the distance between the tips of your shoulder blades.
Armhole: Measure around your armpit, keeping the tape measure parallel to the ground.
How to make a Basic Bodice ?
To make a basic bodice pattern, you will need to take the following measurements:
- Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.
- Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips.
- Draw a vertical line on a piece of paper to represent the Center front of the bodice.
- Measure down from the top of the line the distance of your bust measurement, plus seam allowance (usually 1/2 inch). This will be the top of the bodice.
- From the top of the bodice, measure down the distance of your waist measurement, plus seam allowance. This will be the waistline.
- From the waistline, measure down the distance of your hips measurement, plus seam allowance. This will be the bottom of the bodice.
- To create the side seam, draw a curve from the top of the bodice to the waistline, and another curve from the waistline to the bottom of the bodice. The curves should be slightly curved inward to fit your measurements.
