What is a Measurement ?
A measurement is the act of determining the size, amount, or quantity of something. In the context of science and engineering, measurements are often made using standardised units of measurement, such as meters, grams, and seconds, in order to ensure consistency and accuracy. Measurements can be made using various tools and instruments, such as rulers, scales, and thermometers. In everyday life, we make measurements all the time, whether it's measuring the length of a room to determine how much paint or carpet we need, or measuring the temperature of our food to ensure it is cooked to the proper temperature. Measurements are an important part of many different fields and are used to understand and describe the world around us.
What is a Measurement in Garment Making ?
There are several types of measurements that are typically taken in garment making, including:
Body measurements: These measurements are taken to determine the size and shape of a person's body, and include measurements such as bust, waist, hips, inseam, and others.
Garment measurements: These measurements are taken to determine the size and shape of a garment pattern or finished garment, and may include measurements such as length, width, and circumference.
Fabric measurements: These measurements are taken to determine the amount of fabric needed for a particular garment, and may include measurements such as width, length, and drape.
Accurate measurement is essential in garment making, as it allows the designer or seamstress to create garments that fit well and look good on the wearer.
How we take Body Measurement in Garment Making ?
Gather the necessary tools: You will need a measuring tape, a pen or pencil, and a piece of paper to record the measurements.
Have the person being measured stand in a relaxed position: It's important that the person being measured is standing in a relaxed position, with their feet about shoulder-width apart and their arms hanging naturally at their sides.
Start with the bust measurement: To measure the bust, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the bust, making sure that it is level with the ground. Record this measurement.
Measure the waist: To measure the waist, wrap the tape measure around the natural waistline, which is typically located just above the belly button. Record this measurement.
Measure the hips: To measure the hips, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the hips, which is typically located about 8 inches below the waistline. Record this measurement.
Measure the inseam: To measure the inseam, have the person being measured put on a pair of shoes and stand with their feet shoulder-width apart. Measure from the bottom of the crotch seam down to the floor, following the inner leg seam. Record this measurement.
Measure the shoulder width: To measure the shoulder width, measure from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other shoulder, crossing over the back of the neck. Record this measurement.
It's important to take accurate measurements when making garments, as it ensures that the finished product will fit properly and look good on the wearer.
